Board Guidelines
Guidelines for LDS Writers Dialogue and Discussion (LDS Writers Board):
Before posting on this board, read everything below. Don't gloss over it and attempt to claim later that you didn't know the rules. You agreed to follow the guidelines upon registration. Failure to do so may result in a suspension, banning, or your posting ability being severely limited.
The Purpose of the LDS Writers Board
People of all faiths are welcome to engage in gentlemanly discussion about topics related to writing for or as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Our two most important rules are:
1. Be respectful of the moderators. We don't expect you to agree with our decisions, but we do expect to be respected for the work we put into this board. Do not start threads to criticize moderators, complain
about thread closures, or backtalk when we intervene. Furthermore, do not send us insulting, threatening, or taunting private messages. Just because no one else sees it doesn't mean we won't discipline you for such behavior.
2. Be respectful of each other. This should be a matter of common sense, but we have a detailed list below of the kind of behavior that won't be tolerated.
Mocking each others' beliefs
Judging others
Personal attacks. You may dispute a member's opinion, but you may not label them for having that opinion.
Psychoanalyzing others
Attempting to provoke people
Posting IRL (In Real Life) info about board members
Profanity and vulgarity
Pretending to be someone you aren't, namely, posing as an ex-Mormon when you clearly are not. This only leads to feelings of hostility. We will allow inconsistencies in your story to be pointed out for the purpose of protecting anyone here you are trying to deceive.
Altering members quotes on the board
Quoting members in your signature without obtaining their permission
Choosing offensive avatars or signatures
Copying and pasting material and claiming it as your own or posting anything copyrighted
Derailing threads with irrelevant or unwanted commentary (i.e. If a discussion is about How to Self Publish, don't inject comments like, "YA fiction is getting too racy." You can start your own thread about trends in YA fiction and morality.)
Telling others how to behave. Anything you find objectionable should be reported using the button located in each post.
Refusing to provide appropriate references to support your statements
Badgering a participant for an answer when it has already been given
Creating another user name while you are suspended. This will result in being banned permanently
Creating another user name to send a private message to a member who has blocked you from doing so. You are not entitled to contact anyone who doesn't want to be contacted.
Violating standard rules of debate such as extreme comparisons and hyperbole
Topics We Don't Allow
Personal topics such as "Why I Left the Church" threads. This is not a support group. If you are having a spiritual crisis and need help, contacting your local leaders would be the appropriate action and of course, taking your problem to our Father in Heaven. We do care very much for struggling members, but we don't want to see you made a target for judgment and insults. Don't make yourself the subject.
Anything that resembles what you would find in The National Enquirer or other tabloids (i.e. LDS members accused of bad behavior. These discussions are not productive and only lead to judgment and speculation involving people we don't know.)
Proselyting or "witnessing" from either side is on a case by case basis, but is generally allowed if it maintains a positive tone and does not denigrate others, nor is it the main purpose of your post or thread. Preaching doesn't create a discussion. It is one sided.
Personal Squabbles. If you have a bone to pick with someone else, this is not the place to do it.
Politics (unless directly related to the church or a book you are writing).
Sexually themed threads. These tend to become distasteful and we have some younger participants.
Suicide threats. If you are suicidal, please seek professional help. We sincerely care about you, but we can't allow threads of this nature. Not everyone will have the sensitivity you need and they might actually make things worse.
This is not a free speech board. It's a respectful speech board. We want participation from LDS and non-LDS people. Mocking LDS beliefs will drive away LDS members. This means:
Do not use offensive terms for things we hold sacred.
Do not post temple content or links to temple content.
Do not use nicknames for LDS leaders. Example: Calling Joseph Smith "Joe" is not acceptable
Do not post anything else you know is meant to do nothing more than push others' buttons.
Libel is not tolerated and you may be held legally accountable.
LDS members: You are expected to show the same level of courtesy to other faiths as we want participation from non-LDS people.
Reporting Posts to Moderators
Report a post if it is spam or violates any of the above.
If there are a series of objectionable posts from one person in a single thread, you only need to report one post. It calls our attention to the whole thread.
Do not report the same post twice.
Do not report posts simply because you don't like someone's opinion. You may instead respectfully disagree with them.
Private messages that are harassing or violate other board rules may also be reported. When reported, the message appears in a report folder and when necessary, we can access all logs in our database of private exchanges. We are telling you this for your security.
Your Personal Responsibility
Exercise good judgment. Don't give out too much personal information about yourself and don't assume you know anyone well enough on this message board to do so. Any reasonable person will understand if you don't want to provide more details about yourself than you are comfortable with. If you want to share a phone number or other personal information, do so via email or a board message directly to the person who should receive it.
Don't ask us to ban you. You are responsible for what you post and the amount of time you spend here. Do not ask us to delete your account or any material you may have posted here. This would be against the agreement you made at registration in which you gave us permission to use it.
Social Hall and The Chat room
These two areas are only for friendly discussion. If you use them to argue, you will lose your privileges.
We hope this will be a positive and friendly atmosphere for everyone to discuss topics of interest. Thank you for registering.
